Trends surrounding vegetable oil & the palm oil certification system

6.Conditions for certified palm oil

At the current time, RSPO is the main type of certified palm oil. Other types of national certification include MSPO by the Malaysian government and ISPO by the Indonesian government. RSPO is operated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and fulfills a major role as a labeling system. Global manufacturers of daily sundries played a major role in establishing the RSPO. Presently, on a global level, palm oil production is approximately 60 million tons, of which about 13 million tons (approx. 20%) is certified crude oil and about 6.2 million tons is sold using RSPO certification.
On the other hand, the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification scheme by the Malaysia government is a certification system operated by the Malaysian Palm Oil Certification Council (MPOCC). Although this scheme has just started, programs are being formulated to enhance the scheme with an eye towards 2020.
Currently, Japan imports 600,000 tons of palm oil annually. However, the use of certification systems for this imported oil is limited. The majority of edible oil is distributed and consumed as uncertified palm oil. However, in the future, it is expected that Japanese companies will implement measures for certified oil based on increased understanding and demand among consumers.
