Trends surrounding vegetable oil & the palm oil certification system

Introduction

The Games of the XXXII Olympiad (Tokyo 2020) will be held from July 24 (Fri.) to August 9 (Sun.), 2020. The 2020 Tokyo Paralympics will be held from August 25 (Tues.) to September 6 (Sun.), 2020.
The Japan Olympic Committee (JOC) and Tokyo Metropolis have established the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Committee is conducting activities to prepare for and hold the Games in cooperation with an all-Japan system that includes groups such as the JOC, the Japanese Para-Sports Association, the Japanese Paralympic Committee (JPC), Tokyo Metropolis, the Japanese government, and economic sectors.
The procurement process is one important aspect of preparing for and holding the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In addition to legal compliance, procurement must also consider issues such as environmental impact (global warming, resource depletion, loss of biodiversity, etc.), human rights and labor issues, and fair trade. Therefore, the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games has established the Sustainable Procurement Working Group for detailed review of related issues. The Committee is also reviewing related procurement codes.
At the request of the Committee, the JOPA gave the following explanation at a meeting of the Sustainable Procurement Working Group in regards to palm oil and palm oil certification.
